CAC Virtual Gallery
Comfort and Gratitude, the third installment of our quarterly Excellence in Traditional Fine Art Competition, spotlights a multitude of things for which we are thankful to have in our lives. Imagery could include favorite comfort foods, cherished spaces that hold special meaning, or a portrait of a loved one or a mentor.
Our gratitude goes to Micah Christensen, renowned art historian and curator, for being the guest judge and curating these images for this virtual exhibition, showcasing the most exemplary submissions as well as the prize-winning works.
Artwork is available for purchase. If you have interest in acquiring a work, please submit a purchase inquiry. In addition, we suggest consulting our Terms of Sale.
Congratulations to the Winners!
First Place – $1,000 Prize
Kun Wang
Withered Rose
Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
It is one thing to convincingly and accurately depict an object, it is another to elevate it to something meditative and transpirational as this work does. The strong use of chiaroscuro creates an immediate central focus, while subtle highlights and color transitions lead the viewer through the work in surprising ways. Looking at the work, I find myself turning inward in ways that only great works can stimulate.

Second Place – $500 Prize
Martha Diaz
Evening Glow
Oil, 24" x 34"
The artist has captured so many different qualities of light: thick in the atmosphere, warm against the cold rocks, bright on the water, and dull along the sand. The artist has successfully taken the huge variety of colors and textures that make California coastlines such compelling subjects, and put them harmoniously into one striking image.

Third Place – $250 Prize
Naomi Brown
Rising Moon Over Joshua Tree
Oil and acrylic, 30" x 48"
This work does what everyone of the millions of awestruck casual, amateurs who visits Joshua Tree dreams: shows the moment the sky turns to jeweled colors and the desert changes from inhospitably from hot to cool. The naturalism of these scene belies a masterful control of composition and color as great artists can do.

Honorable Mention – $75 Prize
Marlene Walters
Citrus Basket
Oil on panel, 16" x 16"
At first, to some this may appear to be no more than an unusual angle with graphic colors and designs. But, on closer inspection, it is a masterclass in form, light, shade, and color. Each leaf is a new symphony of greens, each lemon and lime unique and beautiful. To me it is the kind of work that Zurbarán or Chardin would be doing today; exercising their Old Master skills within a modern aesthetic.

Special Recognition– $50 Prize
Michael John Pittas
Jester’s Peak
Oil on canvas, 28" x 20"
With no clear idea of the narrative of the scene, I am astounded by its ambition, vision, and technical skill. Each element of the work is exquisitely and convincingly rendered. The otherworldly palette takes what would be ordinary rocks, clouds, clothes, and birds to a heightened sense of reality. I am unable to look away or stop thinking about it. It is cinematic in the full sense of the word, containing worlds upon worlds.
