Covid Self-Portrait is a response to the time I was forced to spend with myself during the lockdown. I had never done a sculpted self-portrait and models weren’t an option, I found it the perfect time.

There are moments when the heavens open up and illuminate the landscape, as if the landscape itself is being showcased on a stage. These moments are often fleeting, and I do my best to take in the feeling and the experience so that I might be able to capture it on canvas. Morning Has Broken encompasses all that I love about the California coast.

If it were not for comments made by my artistic heroes, confiding in us that a painting he has been trying to finish had to be scraped from his canvas three times and re-worked, I would imagine I was all alone in my struggles to get a painting right and to be happy with the final results.

In 1936, Walter Johnson and four other greats were the original inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame and thereafter became known as the “Five Immortals.” As a baseball fan and Orange County resident, I was surprised to learn that Johnson was raised in Olinda, California, a small community east of Brea. Walter attended Fullerton Union High School where in a ball game against Santa Ana High School he struck out 27 batters in 15 innings. He went on to play for the Washington Senators when they won the World Series in 1924. Later, Johnson and Babe Ruth would come back to Orange County to play in an exhibition game in Brea, which was attended by thousands of fans. What I have attempted to do is not just capture Johnson the baseball player, but Johnson the man.
