Art History Lecture: Geoffrey Beaumont

Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Art History Lecture: Geoffrey Beaumont – “Arthur Beaumont; Art of the Sea.”

Please join us for a special presentation highlighting the life and work of Arthur Beaumont as intimately presented by his son, Geoffrey Campbell Beaumont.
Geoffrey Campbell Beaumont will discuss his recently published book Arthur Beaumont: Art of the Sea, which highlights the maritime paintings of his father, artist Arthur Beaumont (1890-1978). During World War II, Arthur Beaumont documented naval battle scenes in oil and watercolour. In 1946, while serving as Fleet Artist, Beaumont witnessed the atomic bomb tests on Bikini Island and was exposed to radioactivity. Beaumont created numerous paintings depicting naval actions in Japan, China, Guam, Vietnam and the Antarctic, a number of which were reproduced in National Geographic. The 2016 book, Art of the Sea, written by his son Geoffrey Beaumont, traces Beaumont’s life as an artist through a uniquely personal lens. The book features an introduction by The Irvine Museum President James Irvine Swinden, foreword by Rear Admiral Russell S. Penniman IV, and preface written by naval historian James W. Cheevers. Published by The Irvine Museum, Art of the Sea will be available at the lecture for purchase and book signing.
The meeting will start with a buffet lunch, followed by the program. (Ticket price for presentation only is also available.)
