This is a studio painting from a plein air study in the Sierra Nevada mountains at Lake Ediza. This was one of Edgar Payne's favorite locations in the Sierras! I was there with a small group of other plein air painters for five days painting.

Point Lobos is an incredibly inspiring ecological goldmine and a destination must-see in California. I did some plain air composition and color sketches before I created this piece in studio. My focus was on the subtle value and hue shifts within the shadows. But that sandstone rim light drew me in. Absolutely beautiful. I could paint a million years and never capture its natural beauty.
