Art Insiders: Learn & Mingle – Forensic Facial Recognition, Synesthesia and The Artist

With Dr. Robert Kamansky and

CAC Mentor Program Member Natalia Aandewiel

Join the California Art Club for a fascinating conversation with Dr. Robert Kamansky and CAC Mentor Program Member Natalia Aandewiel as they find parallels in portraiture from a forensic, scientific, and artistic perspective. The events fresh and high tech talk will touch on the relation between the artist and Synesthesia, a condition in which one sense is simultaneously perceived as another sense like hearing a color or tasting a sound, and Forensic Facial Recognition, a new technology that helps identify a person based on features and contours of their face.
Natalia Aandewiel is very familiar with Synesthesia, she wrote her MFA thesis on it and its sensory effects on art perception. She will discuss how some neurological disorders and genetic abnormalities influence our sensory perception of the world and how this in tern influences how we create art. Dr. Robert Kamansky’s forensic and government training was the catalyst for his interest in facial recognition. His research led to him writing a document for Homeland Security documenting his process of facial recognition. He will be discussing in detail how this technology works and how it relates to the artist. He will also be discussing pop culture programs like Google Arts and culture’s app that finds your face in a history piece of art and how this mass distributed technology was created.
It is sure to be an inspiring discussion full of possibilities and hypothesis. We can’t wait to see you there!
