There is a timelessness, and a peacefulness, to this piece that simply made me stop in my tracks. While not as illustrative, it reminded me of some of the landscapes by early 20th-century artist, Thomas Hart Benton, one of my favorites. I'm sure, given its large format, it is even more impressive in person.

To capture a moment of such ecstatic movement in the medium of bronze is truly a vision. Everything--from the dancer's anatomical correctness to the flip of her skirt and hang of her ponytail--makes this sculpture feel entirely alive, rather than cast bronze. I wish I could unfreeze her in time and see her next move.

The artist so deftly captured the young women's expression in this portrait. Though one might not be able to put one's finger on exactly what it is, it is somehow recognizable or familiar. Perhaps it is touching upon something innately human, which is what I think elevates a portrait beyond being only of interest to those that know the subject to a place of universal appeal.
