CAC Virtual Gallery
The Sensations of Summer features works depicting anything from children with the impish joy of chasing through the sprinkler, to still life’s detailing sweet, ripe fruits or various summer crops, to waves hitting the shore, crowded beach scenes, to blooms of wildflowers and to figures racing to eat ice cream cones before it starts to melt around their fingers, to national parks.
We extend our thanks to Katie Dolgov, Director of Exhibitions and Collections at Oceanside Museum of Art, for serving as the guest judge and curating these images for this virtual exhibition. Her keen eye highlight the most exceptional submissions, including the prize-winning works.

First Place Winner | $1,000
Glen Maxion
Happy Days
Soft pastel on paper, 25" x 19"
A challenging scene to capture, full of movement and energy. The artist’s spirited style perfectly depicts this high-energy moment, strongly evocative of the sensations of summer - glistening water, crashing waves, barking dogs, salty air, sweat, sun kissed skin, sunscreen, joy. Technically excellent, conceptually unique, and intensely expressive.

Second Place Winner | $500
Ray Hunter
Summer Ride
Watercolor on paper, 14" x 18"
The artist has poignantly captured a personal and introspective moment in the life of this young person. She appears to be experiencing one of the last summers of childhood. Her self-conscious smile hints at the complexities of her inner world as she experiences a quiet, lighthearted moment in the shade with the breeze from swinging. In addition to so expertly depicting this emotionally eloquent scene, the technical execution, dynamic composition, and handling of color are all technically excellent.

Waterplay
Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
You can taste the hose water, can’t you? And feel the sweltering summer air and cool water. It’s one of the most nostalgic memories of summer. There is so much movement, energy, and delight in this image, along with the very challenging task of expressing hundreds of points of movement.
