"The founding of the California Art Club."

"In 1906 a small group of Los Angeles painters formed the "Painters' Club of Los Angeles" and out of this group came the California Art Club. The Painters' Club had 23 members and 13 of these members started the CALIFORNIA ART CLUB in September 1909. From these 13 members Frank R. Liddell became the first president. Followed in 1911 by William Wendt. In the Los Angeles County Museum are some of his paintings. The California Art Club had its first show in the Gallery of the Ivins Apartments, 10th and Figueroa Street from January 31 to February 11. At this show, 64 paintings were exhibited by 19 members. Julia Bracken Wendt was the only woman and only sculptor represented in that initial exhibition of the Club. Some names of the members: Hanson Puthuff, Arion Putnam, Jack Wilkinson Smith, Frans [sic] A. Bischoff, Carl Oscar Borg, Arthur B. Dodge, Frank Tenney Johnson, Dana Bartlett, Benjamin Brown, E. Roscoe Shrader, Paul Lauritz, John Hubbard Rich, Benton Scott, [and] Walter Seeley. These have become famous names in the world of Art today. But our Roster now has names of artists, who already gained fame and artists who will be in the future!

Anthony Anderson, Art Critic for the Los Angeles Times, wrote in the early 20-ies: "Ten years ago, there was no Art club in Los Angeles. Now we have half a dozen of them, the strongest and best-known, being the California Art Club, which gives annually an exhibition of distinguished merit, and which has a membership, recruited from East to West."

[Editor's Note: Some of the information above is incorrect; the Painters' Club had 50 members, and the CAC was formed in December 1909, not September. See The Founding of the Painters' Club and the listing for the 1st Annual Exhibition.]
