From the exhibition pamphlet:
Art clubs in America provide, in a general way, the same sort of stimulus
to the development of the arts as did the Gilds [sic] of the Middle
Ages whose standards of training and workmanship provide the "Old
Masters" of the renaissance,-- carrying on the ancient traditions
of the arts and seeking to improve them, their production, use and enjoyment.
The California Art Club with its members stands
out preeminently not only in California but due to its imposing clubhouse,
made possible by the interest and benefactions of Miss Ailene Barnsdall,
can be favorably compared with any in the world - not exempting the
famous Kunstler Haus in Munich.
A glance through the catalogs of exhibits held during the past twenty-two
years in Los Angeles indicates, in very definite terms, how a group
of creative artists, cooperating with the Museum, arranging exhibitions
and training students in the art schools has been the initial and progressive
factor in developing the arts of California as one of its major attractions
and has had much to do with spreading its beauty abroad.
The greatest significance of the California Art Club's efforts lies,
not only in its effort to improve the quality of work produced but to
enable more of our representative citizens to know and enjoy contact
with the artists and their work -- thus this exhibit is a gesture in
the direction of enabling all people to enjoy the finer things in life
in California.
Prizes, made possible by Los Angeles prominent art collectors and enthusiasts
as an added incentive, include the following:-- the Mrs. Queen Walker
Bordman $100 Prize for Sculpture; the Evelyn Dalzell Hatfield Gold Medal
and $50 for the painting which contributes the most to the success of
the exhibit; the Paul Mabury $50 Prize for Landscape;
the Elizabeth Holmes Fisher $50 Prize for Still Life; the Art Dealers'
$50 Prize to be awarded to an artist not before receiving a prize at
the museum; the California Art Club Prize for Figure Painting, and the
California Art Club Prize for Sculpture.
