THE CALIFORNIA ART CLUB BULLETINS
1925-1994

The California Art Club published a monthly newsletter titled the California Art Club Bulletin. This newsletter contained local art-related news and critiques, details about exhibitions, information regarding Club schedules, forums and meetings, and also served as an outlet for opinions and commentary by Club members. The initial issue came out in November of 1925, with subsequent issues released monthly through 1932.*

Beginning with the August 1927 issue, there appears an interesting logo designed by Harrison Wily** (then Art Director for Columbia Pictures Corporation). Located in the upper lefthand corner of the front page, this design appeared on each subsequent bulletin. It was also used as the letterhead design on the Club's stationary. The logo is based on Frank Lloyd Wright's "formalized" geometric hollyhock design, but with an added border around three of its sides (bottom, left and right). Also included in the August 1927 issue, along with much praise and excitement about the house, was a reprinted brief, personal note to the Club from Aline Barnsdall.
~ Excerpt from Hollyhock House: The California Art Club Years, A Brief Overview.
Written and researched by Clark E. Pardee, III and edited by Linda Benjamin Pardee, 1988.

* In all probability it continued to be published; we pick up the trail again in 1960. -Ed.

** See note in Nov. 1929 CAC Bulletin, Vol. IV No. 11
