California Art Club Gallery at The Old Mill

The California Art Club will be honoring The Old Mill’s bicentennial with paintings of the historic building and its gorgeous grounds.

In preparation for the exhibition, The Old Mill: Celebrating Two Centuries, which will be on display from May 17 – September 11, 2016, the CAC is hosting several paint-out opportunities for eligible artists.

DATES: Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 10 am-4 pm; Friday, November 6, 2015 from 10 am-4 pm

ELIGIBILITY: Signature Artist, Artist, Out-of-State Artist, and Mentor Program Members

COST: Free

DETAILS: The Old Mill, or El Molino Viejo, was completed in about 1816 as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel and is the oldest commercial building in Southern California.

Come paint at The Old Mill to prepare for the exhibition The Old Mill: Celebrating Two Centuries. The artwork submissions for this exhibition will be due on April 8, 2016. These paint-out dates provide artists the option to paint the grounds in the fall and winter months before the deadline. There will be another paint-out in 2016, more information to come.

Morning coffee and donuts will be provided, but please bring your own lunch. Please also bring a drop cloth. Bathrooms available on location.

Artists may also paint on their own during the Old Mill’s public hours (Tuesday – Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m.)

Orange County Paint/Sculpt-Out at Mission San Juan Capistrano

Date & Time: Saturday, November 7, Paint/Sculpt-Out: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Cost: Free ($8-9 to enter the Mission)

Details: Join CAC Artist Member Liliana Simanton and the OC Chapter at this historic location. The group will meet in the front courtyard of the mission at 9:00 a.m. to set up. Bring a picnic lunch or take advantage of the nearby take-out restaurants and enjoy a group art discussion and critique with Liliana at 11:30. You may bring a finished painting to discuss or the morning’s work.

Street parking is available outside the mission. Bells will be ringing at 9:00 a.m. to celebrate the recent canonization of Father Junipero Serra. There is a Mission site tour offered at 2:00 p.m. for any interested. For more information, go to the Mission SJC website.

Palm Springs Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Indian Canyons


A day of painting en plein air in the majestic palm oasis, Andreas Canyon. What could be better? Most people do not know this magical place exists, so enjoy the quiet atmosphere as peaceful flowing water surrounds you.

Palm Springs Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Coachella Preserve


Paint at the gorgeous preserve – palms, mountains and more! Bring your lunch. Artists can stay and paint until dark if they like.

Venue: Coachella Valley Preserve (Meet in the parking lot)

DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy. 10 to Ramon Road. Turn east on Ramon and drive for approximately 6 miles, then turn north on Thousand Palms Canyon Road. Travel for about 4 miles – the entrance is on the left-hand side of the road.

Palm Springs Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Joshua Tree National Park


Joshua Tree National Park has other-worldly desert scenery that has become incredibly popular with sightseeing and tourism. The Palm Springs Chapter is very lucky to have this gem in our desert region. Bring supplies, pack a lunch (bring plenty of water) and prepare to be amazed!

Palm Springs Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Los Rios Rancho


Located just north of beautiful Cherry Valley, Los Rios Rancho is a working apple farm and has many scenic venues to enjoy! So bring your lunch or find a local restaurant and join the Palm Springs Chapter for a full day of painting!

From Palm Springs: I-10 to Beaumont ave. N. It becomes Oak Glen Rd. Head up Mountain to Los Rios Rancho.

From L.A.: Take Live Oak exit N. It becomes Oak Glen rd. Up mountain to Los Rios Rancho Look for orange cones and CAC banner and meet in the parking lot.

Malibu/Ventura County Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Sycamore Cove Beach

Venue: Sycamore Cove Beach (a unit of Point Mugu State Park), 9000 West Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu

Directions/Parking:

From the San Fernando Valley: Take the 101 Ventura Freeway west to Kanan Road in Agoura Hills and turn south. Travel about 15 miles south on Kanan (turning into Kanan-Dume Road) to Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and turn right. Continue west on PCH for about 15 miles, passing Leo Carrillo State Beach at the Ventura County line. Sycamore Cove Beach is about 3 miles further west of the county line on your left hand side.

From Oxnard and Ventura: Travel south on the 101 Ventura Freeway to Las Posas road in Camarillo and turn right heading south. Continue on Las Posas road to PCH. Turn left and head south/east on PCH for several miles until reaching Sycamore Cove Beach on your right.

Event fee: Free

Parking: State parking fee applies.

Pack: Water and lunch, sunscreen and umbrellas.

Details: Expect a day filled with rocky bluffs, grassy valleys, and scattered sycamores! Toilets are located in the beach parking area.

Directions: From the 101 Freeway, take Kanan Road south about a half-mile to left onto Cornell Road. Continue on Cornell about two miles to the park entrance on your right.

Event fee: Free

Parking: Free – there is an extensive dirt parking area.

Details: Pack water and lunch, sunscreen and umbrellas. Two indoor toilet locations: one adjacent to the parking area and one in the western town buildings.

Malibu/Ventura County Chapter Paint/Sculpt-Out – Leonis Adobe and Calabasas Creek Park

The Malibu/Ventura County Chapter enjoyed this new location in early Spring and now will have the opportunity to capture the change of seasons as we head into Autumn harvest and holidays!

Venue: Leonis Adobe Museum and Calabasas Creek, 23537 Calabasas Road, Calabasas, CA 91302

Directions/Parking:

From the San Fernando Valley: take the 101 Ventura Freeway west to the Valley Circle Blvd exit toward Mulholland Dr. Turn left onto Valley Circle Blvd (signs for Calabasas/Mulholland Dr). Turn right at the 1st cross street toward Calabasas Rd
(signs for US-101 S/Los Angeles). Keep left to continue on Calabasas Rd
for about 0.2 miles – Leonis Adobe Museum parking lot entrance will be on your right.

From Oxnard and Ventura: Travel south on the 101 Ventura Freeway and take the exit toward Mulholland Dr/Valley Circle Blvd. Turn right onto Calabasas Rd for about 0.2 miles to the Leonis Adobe Museum parking lot on your right.

Note: Calabasas hosts a farmers market on Saturday mornings so expect many cars and pedestrian traffic on Calabasas Road.

Event fee: Free

Parking: Free museum parking lot open to the public; museum donations welcome. They have graciously offered to block a section for us. Please RSVP to Sandy if you plan to attend so we can let them know how many parking spots to reserve.

Pack: Water and lunch, sunscreen and umbrellas.

Other Details: CAC artists have been invited to paint anywhere on the exterior grounds and in the barn. At Leonis Adobe, there are historic buildings, animals (Percheron horses, Texas longhorn cattle, sheep, goats, lambs), birds (Black Spanish turkeys, roosters, guinea hens, doves), gardens, and nostalgic carts, carriages,
and ranch equipment. We will also have access to Calabasas Creek Park, a short walk across a parking lot, featuring a creek, ducks, a replica jail and Chumash dwellings, plus more gardens and beautiful oak trees. The Leonis Adobe Museum and Plummer House will be open for viewing only.
